Peter Cohen - Artist Statement
Light has an inherent duality that reveals and masks boundaries simultaneously. Vision is just the first step in the capture of light reflecting from the space around us. Seeing is the mental mapping of that light to interpret and form the imagery. We color the space around us with the minds eye to guide ourselves through space and time. My inspirations travel through the Exploding Eye™. The Exploding Eye™ exists in the infinite space between my camera and my imagination. It harnesses the flow of light and dark and focuses a river of color through a prism of possibility. Only then does it become the seed of photographic art from eye-to-mind-to-you™.
"Inner Spaces are Outer Places" reveals my awareness splitting in two directions simultaneously. Looking outward for visual inspirations inevitably draws me inward to discover worlds within worlds. It is a process of abstraction that yields to introspective exploration of these inner worlds and perpetual layers of discovery. Each layer becomes increasingly expansive and unique. The resulting work challenges the observer to seek a point of reference and search for their “OH”. I call the style "abstract to the point of recognition"™.
Creative review and technical analysis reveals a rendering intent realizing the reflections seen and felt. I strive to express the tone and texture of the original experience. Images are printed by me using archival inks and selected media. Mountings range from traditional matted and matted under glass prints to 3 dimensional glassless mounts under matte finish UV laminates.
